What is Aircraft Fuel and Fuel Filters?

The function of a fuel system is to store fuel and provide it to the engine as needed. The fuel system usually consists of fuel tanks, pumps, filters, lines, and injectors, each of which plays a critical role in the performance of the engine as a whole. Fuel is mixed with air, atomized, and vaporized in the air intake system. The mixture is then compressed in the engine cylinder and ignited to produce energy. Fuel systems differ for various engines but the principle mechanisms remain the same. In this blog, we will discuss how fuel and fuel filters work together to maintain the fuel system. For the purposes of this blog, assume we are talking about a diesel fuel system.

Diesel fuel specifications ensure it meets the necessary requirements for providing the proper amount of power, regardless of temperature and operating conditions. Aside from power, fuel has many other important roles, among which are cooling, lubricating, and cleaning. Constant motion creates heat in the engine body, and as the fuel flows through the injection pump, it absorbs the unwanted heat similar to an engine coolant. Fuel also has natural lubricating properties, lubricating the moving components of both the fuel transfer pump and fuel injection pump. This is critical in reducing unwanted wear and tear of the fuel system components to ensure longer service intervals. Finally, the fuel traveling from the fuel tank to the fuel system picks up dirt and dust on its way and delivers them to the fuel filter where contaminants are removed. In this sense, fuel itself is critical in cleaning.

To function properly, fuel must be free of contaminants such as dirt, dust, metal particles, water, and so on. This is where fuel filters come in. A fuel filter is located in the fuel line to stop contaminants in the fuel from passing through. It is a critical part of every fuel system, filtering out particles that could damage the fuel injector. As such, regular maintenance and replacement of your fuel filters is critical.
